A stampede at Cuscatlan Stadium in San Salvador killed at least 9 people and injured several others during a football match. On Twitter, the National Civil Police stated, “The number of deaths after the stampede at the Cuscatlan Stadium amounts to nine.”

“Several” injured people were rushed to nearby hospitals, police said.In the coming hours, it’s possible that the official casualty count will rise.“It was an avalanche of fans who overran the gate. Some were still under the metal in the tunnel. Others managed to make it to the stands and then to the field and were smothered,” an unidentified volunteer with the Rescue Commandos first aid group told journalists, according to AP.

Earlier, at least 85 people were killed and dozens more suffered injuries in a stampede during an event to distribute financial aid in Yemen’s capital on April 20.According to the Houthi-run Interior Ministry, the incident occurred in the Old City in the center of Sanaa when hundreds of poor people gathered at an event organised by merchants.

The ministry’s spokesman, Brig Abdel-Khaleq al-Aghri said the mismanagement by the organizers of the event caused the stampede. He blamed the disaster on the “random distribution” of funds without coordination with local authorities.

Dozens of casualties were taken to nearby hospitals. Motaher al-Marouni, a senior health official in Sanaa, gave the death tally and said at least 13 were seriously injured, according to the Houthi’s Al-Masirah satellite TV channel. The rebels quickly sealed off the school where the event was organised and barred people, including journalists, from approaching.
